Reciting surah al-Ikhlas during the Taraweeh rest periods

Question

What is the ruling on reciting Surah al-Ikhlas during the Taraweeh rest periods, given that some people consider this to be prohibited?

Answer

Islamic law has prescribed the recitation of the Quran in general without restricting it to a specific time or condition, except in certain situations such as during a state of major ritual impurity. The Prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) highlighted the great virtue of surah al-Ikhlas, and encouraged its recitation at night. He told his Companions (may Allah be pleased with them), “Is it difficult for one of you to recite one-third of the Quran in a single night?”
They said, “How can one recite one-third of the Quran?”
He said, “Qul Huwa Allahu Ahad is equivalent to one-third of the Quran”
(recorded by Muslim from Abu al-Darda` and by Bukhari from Abu Sa‘id al-Khudri).

‘Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) also narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) sent a man on a military expedition; he led his companions in prayer, concluding his recitation with ‘Qul Huwa Allahu Ahad.’ When they returned, they mentioned this to the Prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) and he said, “Ask him why he does that.” They asked him, and he replied, “Because it is an attribute of the Most Merciful, and I love to recite it.” The Prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) then said, “Inform him that Allah loves him”
(Bukhari and Muslim).

Based on the above, reciting Surah al-Ikhlas three times during the rest periods of the Taraweeh prayer is a sanctioned practice, with no innovation whatsoever. Whoever claims that it is an innovation is, in fact, closer to introducing an innovation himself, for he has restricted what Allah and His Messenger (peace and blessing be upon him) have left unrestricted without evidence. Such a claim is neither reliable nor worth paying attention to.

And Allah Almighty knows best.
