Responding to the claim that the Sunnah is not divine revelation
Question
Some claim that the Prophetic Sunnah is not a revelation from Allah Almighty. Is this statement correct?
Answer
Allah Almighty sent down the revelation upon His chosen and beloved Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), and guaranteed its preservation; He says, “Indeed, We have sent down the Reminder (the Quran), and indeed, We will preserve it” (Quran, 15:9). Allah also informed us that whatever His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) utters is divinely inspired, “Nor does he speak from [his own] inclination. It is not but a revelation revealed” (Quran, 53:3–4).
The Prophetic Sunnah, therefore, is part of the revelation sent down to the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) informed that Allah granted him the Sunnah as He granted him the Quran. Al-Miqdam Ibn Ma‘dikarib (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Behold, I have been given the Book and something like it along with it” (recorded by Imam Ahmad, Abu Dawud, al-Marwazi in As-Sunnah, at-Tahawi in Sharh Ma‘ani al-Athar, Ibn Hibban, at-Tabarani, and others). The hadith is also narrated with the wording, “Behold, I have been given the Book and what is equivalent to it.” The hadith scholar Ibn Hibban devoted a chapter to establishing that the Sunnah is divine revelation, “Mentioning the report that clearly states that all the Sunnah of the Chosen One (peace and blessings be upon him) comes from Allah, not from his own inclination.”
Imam Abu Muhammad Ibn Qutaybah al-Dinawari noted in Ta`wil Mukhtalaf al-Hadith (pp. 245:246), “The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) knew Allah’s rulings only as He taught them to him. Allah revealed them gradually, not all at once. Jibril (peace be upon him) would convey the Sunnah just as he conveyed the Quran. For this reason, he said, ‘I have been given the Book and something like it along with it,’ meaning the Sunnah.”
The ruling
Everything the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) uttered is the revelation that Allah Almighty inspired in him. Therefore, the Prophetic Sunnah is part of the revelation sent down to the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him).
And Allah the Almighty knows best.
