Renewal of religious discourse
Question
What are the means that lead to the renewal of religious discourse?
Answer
Renewing religious discourse is a matter brought about by the circumstances we face, events that unfold, and developments across various fields, as well as by the passage of time and eras. It refers to the adaptation and development of methods of da’wah (calling to the way of Allah and His Messenger) in ways that are suited to the age in which we live, guided by the Divine injunction, “Call to the way of your Lord with wisdom and good exhortation, and argue with them in the best manner” (Quran, 16:125).
Accordingly, it is incumbent upon us as Muslims to present the true image of Islam and its sound concepts, derived from the Quran and the Sunnah, in keeping with a correct understanding of international, social, and political relations, as well as all other matters pertaining to contemporary humanity. These concepts must be expressed in a way that responds to the realities of each era and time, by taking into account the nature of societal coexistence between Muslims and non-Muslims, and the events that continue to unfold over the course of history. This must be undertaken while remaining faithful to the correct understanding of the Quran and Sunnah. Renewing religious discourse does not mean changing the principles and foundations of Islam, such as matters of creed and issues upon which scholars are in consensus; rather, it means attaining a proper understanding of these sources, free from religious rigidity and fanaticism. Islam calls to all that is good, forbids all that is reprehensible, and rejects excessive strictness and unjustified fanaticism.
And Allah Almighty knows best.
