Postponing the stoning until the last day of Tashreeq
Question
What is the Islamic ruling on a pilgrim postponing the stoning of all the Jamarat until the last day of Tashreeq on which they intend to depart from Mina?
Answer
In Shafiʿi and Hanbali jurisprudence, it is permissible for a pilgrim to combine all the stonings, including Jamrat al-ʿAqabah of the Day of Sacrifice, and throw them all on the day they intend to depart, whether that is on the second or third day of Tashreeq. According to the sounder of the two opinions within these schools, this act counts as a fulfillment of the obligation (`ada`) rather than making it up (qada`) because all the days of Mina are regarded as one. This concept is known as mas`alat al-tadaruk, and it is the apparent position of the Shafiʿi school as noted by imam al-Nawawi in al-Majmuʿ. It is also the official position of the Hanbali school, as mentioned by imam Ibn Qudamah in al-Mughni.
Based on this, it is permissible for a pilgrim to postpone and combine the stoning of all the Jamarat, including Jamrat al-ʿAqabah of the Day of Sacrifice, to the day they intend to depart from Mina, following the opinion of the scholars who permit this. There is no legal objection to this, provided the pilgrim observes the correct sequence of stoning, starting with Jamrat al-ʿAqabah, followed by Jamrat al-Sughra, Jamrat al-Wusṭa, and finally al-Jamra al-Kubra once more. They should the repeat this sequence once for each day they spend in Mina.
And Allah Almighty knows best.
